TOOLS & EXPLAINERS

Five workflows for Perplexity Computer and Claude Cowork

A task-by-task comparison of two agent work surfaces, with the permissions, checkpoints, and current-product caveats that matter.

Two agent workspaces compared across research, data, and content tasks

“Which agent is better?” is usually the wrong question. The useful question is which surface fits the task, the data boundary, and the level of control you need today.

Perplexity Computer and Claude Cowork are changing products. Perplexity's current Computer overview and Anthropic's current Cowork guide are the reader-visible sources for capabilities, connectors, limits, and availability. I treat every comparison here as a reviewed workflow pattern, not a permanent winner.

Set up context before tools

Whichever surface you choose, begin with three files:

  • ABOUT.md: your role, business, audience, and non-negotiable boundaries;
  • VOICE.md: tone, examples, and words you avoid;
  • WORK.md: current projects, definitions, and success criteria.

Connect the minimum accounts needed for the experiment. Authentication does not equal permission to act. I keep sends, deletions, purchases, publishing, and customer-data exports approval-gated.

Use a checkpointed prompt

My prompt contains the objective, context, output format, and three to five phases. I name checkpoints where the agent must stop and show its work.

That is more durable than relying on a product to infer caution. If the task touches private data or an external write, the checkpoint belongs in the instructions and the tool permissions.

1. Content repurposing

Give the agent one approved source and ask for a content map before drafts: audience, central claim, evidence, formats, and what must not be invented. Then approve the map.

The advantage is orchestration across research and files. The risk is flattening voice or fabricating performance claims. I preserve source links and review every public output.

2. Build a dashboard from your data

For a local CSV or exported dataset, ask the agent to profile columns, identify missing data, propose calculations, and build a first dashboard in a new output folder.

Cowork's local-folder model may be useful when the data must stay on the machine; a cloud surface may be useful when approved connectors are central. The choice depends on current product behavior and your data policy. Never upload regulated or confidential data merely for convenience.

3. API analytics

An agent can help inspect an API, write a narrow query, and summarize results. Give it read-only credentials, an explicit date range, rate limits, and definitions for every metric.

The hard part is not generating a chart. It is preventing the agent from mixing endpoints, double-counting events, or presenting a partial response as complete.

4. Deep research

For a research brief, require a source plan first. Prefer primary sources, record retrieval dates, separate direct evidence from inference, and create an unresolved-claims section.

Perplexity's research-oriented surface may feel natural here; Cowork may be preferable when the output must integrate deeply with local project files. Neither removes the need to inspect citations.

5. Research to operating insight

The highest-value workflow is not a long report. It is converting evidence into a decision artifact: what changed, why it matters, what remains uncertain, and the next reversible action.

I ask the agent to write the evidence and recommendation separately. That lets me reject a recommendation without losing useful research.

My selection rule

Choose the smallest surface that can complete the work within the permission boundary. Prefer local execution when local files and privacy dominate. Prefer approved connected research when source discovery dominates. Use checkpoints either way.

The product that feels more powerful is not automatically the safer operator. The better choice is the one whose current capabilities you verified, whose access you can limit, and whose output you can audit.
